Kolkata, 18 February: SUMANTHA Sarkar, State Bank of India (SBI) Baguiati branch cashier who went missing two days ago with Rs 25 lakh from the branch, has been arrested from Raniganj area of Asansol in Burdwan district today.

He is being brought to Baguiati police station, where the manager of the SBI branch had lodged a complaint against him for fleeing with Rs 24, 87,000.

Sumantha who had worked at the SBI Asansol branch about four years ago, was later transferred to Baguiati branch. While in Asansol, he allegedly had a relationship with a woman. The woman was also missing since Tuesday, around the same time when the cashier went missing.

Police had sounded an alert to all the airports, railway stations, and border outposts across Bengal. Consequent upon this, he was nabbed in Raniganj this morning.

As reported earlier, Sumantha had sought leave around 12 noon on Tuesday from the branch manager and had told him that his brother has met with a major accident. As the manager found nothing suspicious in his claim, he allowed Sumantha to go.

While leaving, Sumantha told the manager that he would return by afternoon before the bank closes and locked the cash box himself. But as the cashier did not return till late in the afternoon, the manager lodged a complaint with Baguiati police station.

Sumantha’s family members at Madhyamgram claimed to be unaware of his whereabouts.

Following the complaint, a police team from Baguiati police station came to the branch and broke open the cash box. In the presence of police, other staffs of the branch counted the money deposited and found that Rs 27 lakhs were deposited in the branch till 12 noon on Tuesday. But only Rs 2 lakh was found and the remainder was missing.

Police team obtained the CCTV footage from the branch where Sumantha was seen putting in bundles of cash into his red bag. The footage later showed him leaving the branch with his red bag.

The cashier had asked his brother to take away his motorcycle parked outside the SBI Baguiati branch located near bus stop No 44.
