Siliguri: SECTION 144 of the CrPC has been clamped on Oodlabari in Jalpaiguri district following violent clashes between two sections of a community.

The violence broke out today over the murder of a youth named Md Illias and grievous injury cause to his aide Md Sauban yesterday. The murder took place centring a dispute over the lifting of stones from Ghish riverbed at Oodlabari.

Oodlabari residents Afazuddin Sarkar and son Sohail Sarkar are government approved licensee for lifting stones and gravels from the Ghish river stone quarry. Yesterday afternoon, Md Illias, who is also a resident of Oodlabari, went to the riverbed with some aides and started lifting stones.

A dispute broke out between the Sarkars and Illias over this, during which Sohail Sarkar stabbed Illias in the stomach. His friend Md Sauban was left injured as he tried to resist the attack. The two were rushed to a nearby hospital, where Illias died.

Outraged by this, family and friends of deceased Illias attacked the house of the Sarkar’s today and torched two motorbikes and a car. As the violence spread, shopkeepers downed shutters and people hurried to safety.

Leaning about this, a large police force led by Jalpaiguri SP Amitava Maity rushed to Oodlabri and section 144 of the CrPC was imposed by the district magistrate to bring the situation under control. To avert further violence, rapid action force personnel have been deployed at Oodlabari.
