Kolkata, 02 November: UNIDENTIFIED assailants have murdered a senior functionary of Durbar Mahila Samanwaya Committee, an NGO that works for the welfare of sex-workers of Kolkata.

Coinciding this, two minor girls whom the NGO had rescued from Bowbazar and had kept them in the custody of the murdered functionary, have gone missing.

Murdered Kabita Roy was a president of Durbar in the past, and of late, she was working as a residential caretaker of Durbar’s office at Sonagachi red light area.

She was found dead in her room located on the second floor of Durbar’s office building at 12/5 Nilmoni Mitra Street at Sonagachi today morning. There was a gamcha (cotton towel) tied around her neck and head smashed with a stone.

Other office bearers of Durbar discovered her dead body when they reported for duty today following the Bhai Phonta holiday yesterday. They subsequently discovered that Rs 750 had also been robbed from the cash box of an AIDS helpline centre that Durbar runs on the ground floor of its office building.

Mahasweta Mukherjee of Durbar said that the two girls hailing from Bongaon in North 24-Parganas were rescued by Durbar’s activists on 31 October when they turned up at a brothel at Bowbazar saying that they wanted to join the sex trade.

They being minors, Durbar kept them in the custody of Kabita Roy at it short-stay home for such girls. “The plan was to send them today to government approved child welfare home through the Burtolla police station. But even before this, the two have now gone missing and Kabita-di has been brutally murdered,” Mukherjee said.

Burtolla police have sent Kabita’s body for post-mortem and have pressed in a sniffer dog to trace the route through which the assailants operated. Police are not ruling out the possibility that the two minor girls might have killed the woman with outside help and then fled from the custody.
