Diamond Harbour: A senior staff, who has been working on an extension after retirement, has been found hanging inside a bank in South 24-Parganas district.
The incident has taken place at Natunhat under Basanti police station jurisdiction inside an agriculture co-operative bank named Mini Bank. The deceased has been identified as Kartik Chandra Jana (63).
Jana, who had retired as the manager of the bank, has been working on an extension on half pay for the last three years. Being a veteran staff of the bank with his residence nearby, the keys of the bank were in Jana’s custody and he used to open the bank every day.
Today, when other staff turned up at the bank at the start of the office hours, they found the main door locked from inside. They called out Jana repeatedly but got no response. This made them peep through a window located at the rear of the bi-storied bank building only to find Jana hanging from the ceiling.
They alerted Basanti police station at once. Cops broke open the bank door and retrieved his dead body. They have also found a suicide note from Jana’s table.
According to police, Jana has written that he had borrowed a sizeable amount of money from people but was unable to repay. On the other hand, he was unable to get his son recruited at the bank in a Group D post, a prospect which could have lessened his financial travails.
Police are trying to ascertain as to how much money Jana had exactly borrowed from people and whether he had diverted cash from the bank as well. Local people said that Jana was a cordial man and was always helpful to customers visiting the bank.
