Barasat, 25 June: POLICE have arrested a middle-aged homemaker from Baranagar in North 24-Parganas for killing her mother-in-law over ownership of a plot of family land. The homemaker’s young son too has been arrested.
Victim Madhabi Jana (78) was a resident of Barrister P Mitra Road at Baranagar. Ever since her husband’s death, she used to stay put in her bi-storied house with son Debashish, his wife Shikha and son Debangan. Both the house and an adjacent 5 cotta plot were registered in her name by her late husband.
Daughter in law Shikha Jana had an eye on the plot and had been pestering Madhabi to transfer the property in the name of grandson Debangan. She even readied the necessary papers for this but Madhabi declined to oblige.
This enraged the daughter-in-law so much that she and her son beat up the septuagenarian with sticks yesterday. The old woman’s son, Debashish tried to save his mother but he too came under attack from his wife and son.
Following the beating, Madhabi sustained injuries to her head and was rushed to the Baranagar State General Hospital by her daughter Soma Pramanik who lives in a nearby area with her husband.
Madhabi was later reallocated to the College of Medicine & Sagore Dutta Hospital at Kamarhati as her condition worsened. She succumbed to her injuries there late yesterday night.
Daughter Soma subsequently lodged an FIR against Shikha and her son Debangan at Baranagar police station. Police arrested the duo early today.
