Bankura: A young policeman has died on being hit by a bullet from his service revolver.

The incident has taken place today 11 September at Balarampur in Purulia district. Police are yet to ascertain whether it is a case of suicide or something else.

The deceased, Jaydeep Das, 28, was a native of Goaltore in West Midnapore. He was posted at Balarampur police station in Purulia as a constable.

Das, along with other policemen, went out for a routine patrol along the Jharkhand border. This is to deter the intrusion by criminals and Maoist insurgents who often crossover to Bengal.

During the patrol, the young constable went inside a jungle by the road. His colleagues thought that he was relieving himself.

But a little later, they heard four-five gunshots and rushed inside the jungle to find Das lying on the ground with a bullet injury. They at once took him to Bansgarh Rural Hospital where doctors declared him dead on arrival.

The dead body of the deceased constable was subsequently sent to Purulia District Hospital for post-mortem.

Akash Magharia, the superintendent of police in Purulia, said that a probe is on to find out the circumstances in which the constable got hit by bullets.
