Siliguri: Several areas in Jalpaiguri town have been flooded by rainwater following the incessant downpour since yesterday afternoon.

According to the weather office, it has rained a whopping 210 mm in all over Jalpaiguri district in the last 24-hours till 8.30 this morning. Of this, 142 mm rainfall occurred in Jalpaiguri town alone.

The downpour has led to swelling in the Teesta, Karatoya, Jaldhka, Torsha, Raidak and other rivers in the region. This is stopping the water in the town to drain out.

As a result of this, areas like Hospital Para, Mahamaya Para, Chunilal Road, Jayanti Para, Station Road, Panda Para, and Congress Para in Jalpaiguri town go under knee to waist deep water. Flood water has even forayed to the Jalpaiguri District Hospital premises.

In neighbouring Maynaguri town also several areas have been flooded by the overflowing river water. The administration has sounded a yellow alert in the town.

At Tufanganj in Cooch Behar district, 27 families have taken shelter in school buildings after water from Raidak river inundated their houses in ward 5. Yesterday some 100 houses were flooded by rainwater at Tufanganj and Cooch Behar-II block.

The situation has improved a little at Banarhat in the Dooars, where rainwater had submerged the town by up to knee deep water. This is due to a break in the downfall since last night.

But the worry for the districts of Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Alipurdura, Cooch Behar, and Jalpaiguri remain as the weather office has forecast heavy rain over the next 48-hours.
