Kolkata: GIVING in to the relentless agitation by parents, GD Birla Centre for Education off Tollygunge in Kolkata has removed the school principal Sharmila Nath. The decision came this evening following a nearly three-hour meeting between the school management and the representatives of the Parents’ Forum.
Following this, the agitating parents have agreed to the reopening of the school from tomorrow (Thursday) as it was shut by the management with effect from 4 December following the agitation.
The twin announcements has been made by a representative of the agitating patents; a formal confirmation from the management is awaited. The school management’s official spokesperson Subhash Mohanti said that Nath has “apparently” been removed but he has not yet been briefed about the decision taken in the meeting.
The parents have been demanding the removal of Nath as principal over her insensitive response to the allegation of sexual abuse of a nursery girl students in the school by two teachers on 30 November. Nath had first claimed that nothing had happened to the girl in the school and then had termed the sexual abuse by the two teachers “a small mischief.”
The announcements came even as a section of the higher secondary students of the school and their parents entered into an ugly verbal spat in front of the school this afternoon with those parents demanding the removal of the principal. This section wanted that the school should reopen at the earliest.
Acting on a complaint lodged against her by the victim’s father, the police yesterday questioned principal Nath at Lalbazar for about six hours. Today, police quizzed at Lalbazar the girl’s class teacher, a female attendant of the school, and a security guard.
The two accused teachers ~ Abhishek Roy and Md Mafizuddin ~ are already under arrest and have been remanded in police custody until 15 December. [READ: Two teachers held for sexual abuse of girl student in famed Kolkata school]
On the other hand, the abused child today underwent a medico-legal test at SSKM Hospital as part of the police investigation. The test came after the Alipore court in the city gave permission for the same. Earlier on 1 December, the girl had undergone a medical examination following the sexual abuse that she was subjected to.
LATEST : GD Birla school management’s official spokesperson Mohanti has confirmed late tonight that principal Sharmila Nath has been “relieved of duties and responsibilities with immediate effect.” “The school is reopening tomorrow starting with the senior section. Two vice-principals will run the school with the help from a co-ordination committee formed by the management,” he said.
