Siliguri, 19 August: SILIGURI Mayor Asok Bhattacharya on Wednesday called on the Union minister of state for urban development Babul Supriyo in New Delhi over Central assistance for development projects in Siliguri.
The Siliguri Mayor who is from the CPI-M had flown to Delhi yesterday, to take part in an all India mayoral conference in the Capital.
On the side-lines of the conference, he called on MoS Mr Supriyo today at the latter’s office at the Union urban development ministry to discuss Central funding for various urban projects in Siliguri. Mr Bhattcharya was accompanied by CPI-M Rajya Sabha MP Ritabrata Banerjee.
The meeting lasted for over half-an-hour. Later, the Siliguri Mayor said that he had a fruitful discussion with the Union minister, who happens to be a BJP MP from Asansol in Bengal.
“I am aware that the Centre cannot reach us bypassing the state government. Yet I came to see him so to get some advice at least, for the sake of Siliguri’s development,” Mr Bhattacharya said, showering parses on Mr Supriyo for the warm welcome he accorded to him.
Mr Supriyo said that he has assured Mr Bhattacharya that political differences would not come in the way of him helping Siliguri in development. “The Mayor has raised some issues that they are facing. I have asked him to send the details in writing so that I can take up them for resolution.”
