Siliguri: A court in Jalpaiguri has sentenced a man to life imprisonment for raping his daughter some nine years ago.
While handing out the sentence to convict Subhash Roy alias Subhash Burman today, judge Himadri Shankar Ghosh of the Jalpaiguri fast-track court referred the crime as heinous and rare.
Apart from the life in jail, Subhash Roy has also been fined Rs 50,000. The state government has been directed to pay Rs 3-lakh as compensation to the victim girl, who is now 21 years old.
The incident took place on 14 January 2008 when the girl was 12-years old. She used to live in a rented house at Haiderpara Surjya Sekhar Colony in Siliguri with her father Subhash Roy, a rickshaw puller, and her mother, who worked as a domestic help. The area comes under the administrative jurisdiction of Jalpaiguri district.
On that fateful day, the girl was alone at home as her mother out to serve in a household where she worked as a part-time domestic help. Suddenly her father came home by taking a break from rickshaw pulling. Finding his daughter alone, he then raped her.
Hearing her screams, landlord Diptibhusan Pal came rushing and with the help of neighbours rescued the girl by breaking open the door. The girl was taken to Siliguri Hospital as she was bleeding from her private parts; the accused father was handed over to Bhaktinagar police station.
Police subsequently started a case under 376 (2) (F) of Indian Penal Code that pertains to the rape of a girl below 12 years. The trial lasted in Jalpaiguri court for nine years during which the 15 witnesses deposed before the judge. This led to the accused being convicted of the rape of his daughter.
