Kolkata: Siliguri Mayor and veteran CPI-M MLA, Asok Bhattacharya, has been implanted with a stent to clear the blockage in his heart.

Bhattacharya, 70, suffered a heart attack in Siliguri on 25 August. After remaining admitted to a private nursing home in Siliguri for a day, he started for Kolkata last night.

Accompanied by wife Ratna Bhattacharya, CPI-M Darjeeling district secretary Jibesh Sarkar, leaders Saman Pathak and Partha Maitra, the Siliguri Mayor reached Sealdah station by Padatik Express today 27 August morning.

He then availed the battery-operated car service of the railways to come out of the station complex and was then taken to a renowned private hospital on EM Bypass in an ambulance.

The hospital at once placed him under the treatment of heart surgeon Subharan Roy, who carried out an angioplasty and then implanted a stent to keep the blockage at bay in the heart of Siliguri Mayor.

Jibesh Sarkar later informed that post the implantation of the stent, the Mayor has been kept in the ICU and is likely to be shifted to a general bed later today.

“He is completely stable and interacted with all of us. Going by the doctors, he can go back to his routine life in a day or two,” Sarkar said.
