Siliguri, 28 January: STUDENTS in Siliguri, who have not yet got their free bicycles as promised by the Chief Minister, would start receiving them from 04 February onwards, the Darjeeling district administration has assured.
“The DM has ordered that the cycles will be distributed from 04 February. We had a meeting with the head teachers of all schools in Siliguri and they have been informed of the same,” Siliguri sub-divisional officer, Rajanvir Singh Kapur, today said. The bicycles will be handed over to the students at their respective schools.
The announcement comes in view of the near five hour blockades yesterday on all major thoroughfares in Siliguri by the students of some 10 government-run schools, who have not yet got their bicycles.
The aggrieved students had resorted to similar blockades in Siliguri on 25 January, on a day when the Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had formally distributed bicycles to around 25,000 students out of the eligible 40,000.
Students studying in classes VII to X in government-run schools are eligible to get free bicycles under the Sabuj Sathi scheme launched by the Chief Minister.
