Siliguri, 12 September: SILIGURI is set to host a first ever sub-regional tourism festival covering India, Nepal and Bhutan at City Centre in the town on 3 and 4 October.
Association for Conservation and Tourism (ACT), a voluntary organisation based in north Bengal, will organise the festival in association with the City Centre management. The two-day gala is part of the World Tourism Day Festival 2015; World Tourism Day is celebrated on 27 September every year.
Announcing the festival at a Press conference at Siliguri Journalists’ Club yesterday, ACT convener Raj Basu said that “it will be a historical event for West Bengal. The event aims to promote responsible tourism on an international platform.”
In recognition of the “first-of-its-kind effort,” Gangtok based daily, Sikkim Express has constituted a Regional Tourism Award under which 14 awards in nine categories would be conferred on individuals and associations involved in tourism activities.
But what is in store for the common people visiting the festival? To this, Mr Basu listed out a host of activities that City Centre would witness on 3 and 3 October.
These include an exhibition of photographs by photo-journalists from India, Nepal, Bhutan and Bangladesh; an international ethnic fashion show by designer Alka Sharma and Rohan Pariyar with choreography by Kuntanil Das of International Institute of Fashion Design (INFID).
This apart, there will a multi-cultural show with performances by artistes from India, Nepal and Bhutan, and an exhibition of organic and indigenous food and tea.
