Kolkata, 24 March: SIX tourists from a same neighbourhood at Baguiati in Kolkata have died in a road accident at Jajpur district in Odisha today noon. Two more are battling for life at a government hospital there.

The group of eight neighbours from Baguiati’s Deshbandhunagar Saha Para had gone to Shankapur Digha in East Midnapore yesterday on a holiday trip. Today morning they set out in a Mahindra Scorpion for Chandipur in Odisha, where they had planned to spend a night.

According to Odisha police sources, the Scorpion was moving at a high speed to cover the near 104km distance from Digha to Chandipur. While passing through Neulpur village, a bull suddenly surfaced on the road. In trying to negotiate, the Scorpion driver lost control making vehicle turned turtle and fall in a roadside ditch.

The intensity was such that the Scorpion was left in a mangled state. Three of the occupants died on the spot; the rest five were rescued by a team from Dharmasala police station and admitted to a community health centre at nearby Barchana village.

Three of the injured succumbed to the injuries at the health centre; the two other are battling for life. Odisha police termed their condition as extremely critical.

The deceased have been identified as Samir Dutta, Amit Choudhury, Shubhra Choudhury, Pralay Saha, Emily Das, and Srija Das.
