Kolkata, 13 September: DIRECTORATE of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) officials have confiscated smuggled gold worth about a whopping Rs 2.18 crore and have arrested three persons in this connection.

The trio, all of them residents of Basirhat in North 24-Parganas, was moving in a private car when DRI officials intercepted them at Dhapa on EM Bypass in Kolkata at the junction of Pragati Maidan fire station and Basanti Expressway.

On searching, they found 50 gold bars weighing about 7.4 kgs that the trio was carrying in the car. On being quizzed they confessed to DRI officials that the gold had been smuggled from Bangladesh and was meant to be delivered to some traders in Kolkata.

Following this, DRI officials arrested the trio, who has now been remanded to judicial custody until 21 September after being produced in Alipore court.
