Kolkata: In the season of the back-to-back bridge collapse, fire, and bomb blast, even the slightest unusual activity seems to be taking on the nerves of the people in Kolkata!

Around noon today, a video showing loose sand freefalling from the AJC Bose Road Flyover in central Kolkata surfaced on social media. The exact spot recorded in the video was at the junction of AJC Bose Road – Rawdon Street near La Martiniere school.

Within minutes, the video went viral and people started expressing apprehension that the flyover may collapse anytime. The matter did not take long to reach Kolkata Police, making the cops rush to the spot for an inspection.

The inspection revealed that some causal workers hired by Kolkata Municipal Corporation were cleaning the flyover. The workers swept the dust through a drainage pipe in the flyover and those started to free fall on the AJC Road below.

To assure people that there is no cause for worry; Kolkata Police uploaded a post on its official social media page.

“At the crossing of AJC Bose Road – Rawdon Street some people had noticed that sand was falling from the Flyover and this was creating panic. This has been recorded on video and has been circulated over social media.”

“It is clarified that the men employed for cleaning the AJC Road Flyover had swept the road and pushed the dust through the drain pipe on the Flyover and this was recorded. There is no cause for panic.”

The incident has once again brought to fore the fact that social media are a double-edged sword.
