Kalyani: AN elderly man has been killed by his son in Nadia district for abusing daughter-in-law under the influence of alcohol.
The incident has taken place at Kalitala area under Hanskhali police station jurisdiction yesterday night. The deceased has been identified as Baidyanath Banerjee (65). He was house painter by profession.
A widower, Banerjee used to live with his son and daughter-in-law. Last night he came home drunk and asked his daughter-in-law to serve dinner. Once into dining, he found the meal not to his taste and began verbally abusing the daughter-in-law. Not stopping at this, under the influence of alcohol, he even physically assaulted her.
His son Bikash, who is in his mid-30, was home and he intervened in the matter. This led to a commotion between the father and son and the duo eventually beat up each other with bamboo sticks.
The fight left Baidyanath bleeding from the head and Bikash suffered injuries in his right ear. Hearing about the commotion, neighbours arrived soon and rushed the injured father-son to the Shaktinagar District Hospital at Krishnanagar.
Doctors declared the father Baidyanath dead on arrival; son Bikash was hospitalised for treatment. On learning about the incident, Hanskhali police station has registered an FIR against son Bikash for the unintentional murder of his father.
Policemen have been deployed in the hospital ward where is under treatment now. He will be arrested after being discharged from the hospital, police sources said. A post-mortem was performed on his deceased father today.
