Kolkata: A youth in a Kolkata suburb has committed suicide following alleged continuous blackmail and extortion by his girlfriend by using a video clip of their physical relationship.
The deceased youth, Sourav Ghosh (23), was a resident of Doltala locality at Sonarpur in the southern suburb of Kolkata. He used to work at a bookstore in College Street in the city.
His elder brother lives at Hridaypur in North 24-Parganas. On 19 July, Sourav went there but instead of paying a visit to his brother, he jumped in front of a moving train near Hridaypur railway station.
A critically injured Sourav was rushed to Barasat District Hospital. As his condition deteriorated, his family later relocated him to a private hospital in south Kolkata. Sourav succumbed to the injuries there on 21 July.
After his death, his family members browsed his mobile phone and came across a video message recorded before his suicide wherein Sourav has accused his girlfriend Puja Das (20) of continuous extortion and blackmailing by threatening to show his parents a video-clip of their intimate moments that she had shot on her mobile phone.
In the video message, he said that he tried to meet her demands for money and other stuff for several months but was unable to withstand the pressure of the blackmail anymore. He also said that Puja’s parents and relatives insulted him on several occasions.
On discovering the video message, Sourav’s family has now lodged an FIR against his girlfriend, her parents, her maternal uncle, and aunt at Sonarpur police station. Police, however, are yet to make an arrest in this connection.
The deceased youth’s family informed that Puja’s maternal uncle is a neighbour of theirs, while she hails from Buri Bot Tala area of Sonarpur. It was during her visits to her maternal uncle’s house that she developed the relationship with Sourav over a year ago.
