Diamond Harbour: A village in Bishupur in South 24-Parganas today witnessed street violence after a private car ran over a man.
This happened at Bishnupur’s Rampur village today morning. Angry over the mowed down of their fellow villager, a mob of a few hundred people torched the killer car and, severely assaulted the driver.
The situation turned volatile, making a large police team from Bishnupur police station to rush to the spot and calm down the mob through a prolonged persuasion.
Police also rescued the driver, arrested him and, then admitted to a hospital as he has suffered significant injuries.
Victim Dinbandhu Sarkar was cycling his way to work in the morning when the car at high speed hit him on the highway at Rampur. He was flung into a roadside ditch.
Some fellow villagers retrieved him and were rushing to a nearby hospital that Sarkar died mid-way.
It was after this that the villagers burst into anger and resorted to violence. They have alleged lack of police vigil to stop rash and drink driving on the highway passing through Bishnupur.
