Kolkata, 15 December: WEST Bengal Assembly today passed the St Xavier’s University Kolkata Bill 2016 paving the way for setting up a new private university in the state by a trust that runs the famed St Xavier’s College at Park Street.

The university will come up on a 10 acre plot at Rajarhat New Town and construction work for the campus has already been started. It is likely to start functioning from the next academic year.

St Xavier’s University will be the eighth private university in the state. Earlier seven private universities were set up in the state ever since the Trinamool came to power in 2011.

The new university will impart under graduate, post graduate, and doctoral studies in science, technology, law, management, humanities, medicine, performing arts etc. It will arrange its own funding and decided the fee structure. The state government will have power to give directions to the university as regards the interest of the students.

State higher education minister Partha Chatterjee said that the move was a part of the state government’s policy to meet growing demand for higher education by encourage private investment in the sector.

He expressed hope the university by such a famed educational trust would help improve the standard of higher education in Bengal.
