Kolkata: The state government has dissolved the Trinamool-run elected board of Chandannagore Municipal Corporation in Hooghly and has appointed a civil servant as administrator to run it.
Municipal affairs minister Firhad Hakim has told reporters: “Chandannagore Corporation was being run in an extremely indiscipline and chaotic manner. The elected board strayed from the mandate to serve the people, which is Trinamool’s motto. Hence, we have dissolved the board.”
Hakim said that other civic bodies in the state should take it as a signal that the government will not be hesitant to take drastic steps for the public interest.
“This is a signal to all other civic bodies in the state. Those working to further their vested interests and denying service to the people will be dealt with strictly even if our party is in power in such a civic body. Factionalism will not be tolerated at all,” the minister said.
Chandannagore Municipal Corporation has been dogged by factionalism among the ruling Trinamool councillors for almost a year now. In fact, it is alleged that Chandannagore Mayor Ram Chakraborty was part of a conspiracy that led to the assassination of Trinamool’s Bhadreswar Municipality chairman Manoj Upadhyay on 21 November last year.
Going by the state municipal act, the state has powers to dissolve an elected civic body board and appoint an administrator. However, a fresh election has to be held within six months. The last civic poll in Chandannagore was held in 2015 and the board had tenure till 2020.
