Kolkata, 20 February: THE state school education department will rebuild the non-provincialised school at Baguiati in the city that was razed down by a real estate developer in the wee hours of 18 February.
Speaking at an event at Netaji Indoor Stadium today, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said that the school would continue to be at the same site at Baguiati’s Dashdrone and directed the school education department to rebuild it at the earliest.
“Why there is so much greed; there has to be a limit. How could anyone demolish a school!” she wondered, adding that such outrageous acts would not be tolerated. “Don’t perceive my government to be a weak one. I would not hesitate to take tough actions to curb such outrageous acts.”
At Banerjee’s direction Rs 5-lakh has been sanctioned for the school authorities from Trinamool MP fund towards reinstating the school to its previous state. The fund is being routed through the DM of North 24-Parganas.
This on a day the Lila Devi Memorial School authorities resumed classes for the lower classes by placing tarpaulin sheets on the razed down roof. A police team from Baguiati police station was posted at the school.
Swapan Maitra, the executive engineer of Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation visited the ravaged school site during the day to assess the damages. “The main structure is more or less intact. It would take at least 15 days to repair the building,” he said.
Lila Devi Memorial School runs classes from nursery to VIII and follows the syllabus of the West Bengal Board of Secondary Education. Since 1997, the school has been operating on rent on the first floor of a two-storeyed building. It has around 450 students.
In 2015, a real-estate developer Mizanur Rehman had bought the building from the original owner to construct a multi-storeyed building there. Since then, he had been trying to evict the school.
Failing to do so through other means, he employed workers who razed the school building in the wee hours of 18 February, triggering severe criticisms from all over. Rehman was subsequently arrested on the basis of a complaint by school headmaster Kaushik Bhattacharya.
