Kolkata: Police have arrested a youth for vandalising a statue of Kavi Guru Rabindranath Tagore at Salt Lake. Two of his accomplices are absconding.
This has happened around 6.30 this morning at the Vidya Bhavan rotary at Salt Lake where the statue was installed in 2015.
According to Nirmal Dutta, Ward 38 Trinamool councillor of Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation, people of the area saw three young men hurling bricks at Tagore’s statue in the morning. A brick hit the jaw of the statue and ended up breaking the portion.
By the time the residents gathered to dissuade the trio, two of them fled. The third young was nabbed by the residents and handed over to Bidhannagar South police station.
Police have booked him for vandalising public property and have launched a manhunt for two of his absconding accomplices.
The arrested youth has been identified as Sujay Mondal, a resident of low-income Duttabad area at Salt Lake. Mondal is a taxi driver by profession.
The Trinamool councillor alleged that Mondal is a BJP supporter but could not spell out the motive behind vandalising the Tagore statue. Police said that they were questioning Mondal to find out the motive of the crime.
