Kolkata: A teenage boy has died and his friend has been injured in a motorcycle accident on Vidyasagar Setu, aka, Second Hooghly Bridge, in Kolkata.
The accident took place around 7 this morning when the two teenage boys were performing stunts on the bridge while riding a motorcycle.
The deceased boy has been identified as Lalu Sahani alias Samuel (17), a resident of Bhowanipore in south Kolkata. He was a student of class XI in a private English. Police say that none of the boys were wearing helmets.
According to Lalu’s family, he took out his elder brother’s motorcycle in the morning without informing anyone and then went out on a joyride with a friend from the neighbourhood.
With toll charges on two-wheelers been recently waived off by the state government, the two teenage boys drove through the Second Hooghly Bridge towards Howrah. A little later they made a U-turn and started driving towards Kolkata.
During this return ride, Lalu was driving the motorcycle without holding the steering. His pillion rider friend was standing up from the seat at regular interval. As they were performing the stunts, Lalu suddenly lost control of the motorcycle and it hit the guard wall of the bridge and then overturned.
Policemen on duty on the bridge rescued the two teenagers in an injured condition and rushed them to SSKM Hospital. Lalu was declared dead on arrival; his friend is admitted at the hospital.
