Bolpur, 31 October: TENSION prevails at Lohapur village near Nalhati in Birbhum after unidentified miscreants desecrated the Kali idol at a local community puja pandal.
Members of the Lohapur Bazar Sarbajanin Kali Puja Committee said that they found two arms of the idol broken and the bust of Lord Shiva turned backwards when they went to the pandal today morning.
As soon as the news about the damage to the Kali idol spread, traders at Lohapur downed their shutters. Subsequently, residents blocked the Nalhati-Azimganj rail line at Lohapur station against police inaction which they held responsible for the spurt in anti-social activities in the area.
The blockade stranded two passenger trains for over half-an-hour until the senior police officers reached the spot. Initially, the blockaders declined to lift the blockade and instead began to agitate surrounding the police officers. The agitation was called off only after the police promised an immediate meeting to discuss the demands of the agitators.
Later, around noon, residents and senior police officers sat for meeting. During the meeting, residents said that they would not immerse the Kali idol until the culprits who broke the idol were identified and arrested. They also said that the agitation against the desecration of the idol would be intensified with support from people from the adjoining villages.
Finding the situation going out of control, police officers promised that the miscreants would be identified and arrested within 24-hours. Subsequent to this, the residents of Lohapur have now suspended their agitation for the time being.
Meanwhile, in view of the prevailing tension, additional police pickets have been posted in and around the sensitive areas of Lohapur.
