Barasat, 04 November: AS many as 50 under-trial prisoners at Barrackpore Sub-Divisional Correctional Home have taken ill presumably due to food poisoning.
Thirty two of them have been admitted to the B N Bose Hospital at Barrakpore as their condition turned critical.
Barrakpore jail has around 400 prisoners and under-trials. According to jail sources, soon after lunch early this afternoon, several of them complained of stomach ache and vomiting.
They were initially treated by the jail doctors but 32 of them were admitted to the B N Bose Hospital late in the afternoon after their condition deteriorated.
ADG (jail) A K Gupta and Barrakpore police commissioner Neeraj Kumar Singh visited the hospitalised under-trials and took stock of the situation. They also visited the Barrackpore jail and enquired about the food that was served to the inmates at lunch.
Gupta told reporters that a probe has been started to find out whether the food poisoning took place accidentally or it has been done deliberately with the intention of creating unrest in the jail.
