Asansol: THREE Left Front workers have been hospitalised and a CPI-M MLA has suffered a mild injury after they were attacked today allegedly by Trinamool men at Durgapur in West Burdwan district.

Led by Durgapur East CPI-M MLA Santosh Debroy, members of 13 Left Front organs today headed to the state-run Durgapur Projects Ltd (DPL) to submit a memorandum against the recent imposition of a security deposit for electricity consumers.

As soon as the Left protest rally reached DPL, some Trinamool men armed with rod and lathis launched an attack on them. This happened in front of the police, Debroy said.

The attack left some 10 Left workers injured and three of them had to be admitted to Durgapur Sub-divisional Hospital as they have suffered bleeding injuries in the head. MLA Debroy was also hit in the head but the injury is mild.

“Our agitation was against the imposition of a security deposit by DPL which has affected a large number of electricity consumers at Durgapur. But in Mamata Banerjee’s regime, raising voice on any issue of public interest is banned and hence her cadres carried out the unprovoked attack on us today,” the MLA told reporters.

Trinamool leaders of West Burdwan district has dismissed the allegation that the attack was carried out by the party cadres. “It was the outcome of CPM’s infighting. They are trying to malign us now,” a Trinamool leader said.
