Kolkata, 04 February: THREE workers of a chemical factory at Elachi near Narendrapur in South 24-Parganas have been grievously injured following a blast at the factory today morning.
The factory manufactures rubber soles for shoes and for this different types of chemicals in large quantities are stored there. The workers were busy in their job around 11 am this morning, when suddenly the blast suddenly occurred. The blast was so intense that the residents in the vicinity got alerted.
The three workers were rescued from the site by local residents and were rushed to the M R Bangur Hospital at Tollygunge in Kolkata. Condition of two of them is critical.
The owner of the factory was reportedly present at the factory at the time of the blast, but has gone absconding since. A police team from Sonarpur police station reached the spot later and have begun a probe to ascertain the cause of the blast.
According to police sources, the factory lacked adequate fire-fighting and necessary safety measures in place measures in place and yet it has been functioning for the past several years.
