Asansol, 06 March: THREE persons have been grievously injured after a fire broke out at an automobile workshop adjoining the Panagarh Air Force base in Burdwan district today afternoon. Two fuel tankers, two trailers, and a bike have been completely damaged in the fire.
Welding was being carried out in a tanker at the workshop when sparks from this came in contact with some fuel stored inside the facility. Within moments, flames engulfed the tanker under repair and two trailers parked nearby.
The fire quickly spread to another tanker and a motorbike parked close by the workshop. The tanker was filled to brim with fuel.
Workers at the workshop were caught unaware by the sudden turn of events; with the flames spreading so fast, they had little time to react. Three workers sustained grievous injury in the incident and have now been admitted to hospitals. Their condition is stated to be critical.
Four fire tenders from a state fire service station failed to douse the raging flames due to presence of petrol, diesel and other inflammable materials at the garage.
It was then that a fire tender loaded with fire-retardant foam was rushed in from the Panagarh Air Force base. It succeeded to snuff out the fire, but by then the motor workshop was destroyed entirely.
This was on a day when residents of a village adjacent to the Panagarh Air Force base handed over a youth to the police after they found him moving suspiciously around the Air Force facility. Villagers told police that there were two youths but one managed to escape in thin air.
Police are questioning the youth to ascertain his identity and purpose. Simultaneously, the cops have launched a search for the second youth as described by the villagers.
