Diamond Harbour, 6 October: THREE women have been run over by a local train at an unmanned railway crossing near Namkhana in South 24-Parganas.
The middle-aged women, yet to be identified, were passing through the railway crossing on foot lugging sacks on their head, when a Sealdah-Namkhana local train ran over them. The incident took place this morning at Rajnagar Level Crossing located close to Ukiler Hat rail station.
It is suspected that the women did not hear the train’s whistle as their ears were covered by the sacks and they could not move around their head under the weight of the sacks loaded with vegetables. They were vegetables vendors.
The accident disrupted train movements on the route for over an hour until Government Railway Police personnel came and removed the dead bodies. Residents of the area said that they have been demanding a guard at the level crossing for the past several years.
