Siliguri: One tourist has died and six have been critically injured following a head-on collision between an SUV and a lorry in the Dooars in north Bengal.
The accident occurred today around 9.30 am near Birpara Chowpathy in Alipurduar district. After the accident, the driver of the lorry sped away. It was local people who alerted police and the cops rescued the injured.
Police and tourism industry sources in north Bengal said that a group of tourists from Andal in West Burdwan had come to spend the winter holidays in Dooars. They were lodging in a private resort at Lataguri in Jalpaiguri district.
Today morning, they set out in an SUV for a day trip to Jaldapara Wildlife Sanctuary. As they were crossing Birpara Chowpathy on the Asia Highway, a speeding lorry from the opposite directed rammed in straight on to the SUV leaving it twisted.
The seven tourists in the SUV were badly injured. Police rescued them and rushed to the nearby Birpara State General Hospital. There one of them, Dhananjay Dutta (47), was declared dead on arrival.
The remaining six critically injured tourists were at once referred to the North Bengal Medical College and Hospital in Siliguri. There are admitted there.
The deceased tourist’s dead body was sent to the Alipurduar District Hospital for post-mortem.
