Asansol: TWO contract workers died and five fell ill following a toxic gas leak at the Durgapur Steel Plant (DSP), a Central PSU located in West Burdwan district.

The incident took place in the wee hours today at DSP’s Coke Oven unit. Sources said that the contract workers were taking rest after working overnight when the incident of gas leak took place around 2 in the morning.

Two workers named Sheikh Hafizul and Samir Chakraborty died on the spot. Five others were taken ill. Of them, Prabir Bose and Sheikh Fariuddin are critical and they have been admitted to a private super-specialty hospital at Durgapur. The remaining three are admitted to DSP’s own hospital.

DSP sources said that none of the deceased or injured workers were on the company’s payroll. They were engaged on contract through a private firm named Shivam Engineering.

Peeved at the deaths, all the workers at DSP Coke Oven unit held a demonstration at the company’s administrative office today morning. They demanded proper safety measures to avert further accidents.
