Barasat: A train passenger has been killed in a crude bomb attack at Kankinara railway station in North 24-Parganas district.
The deceased has been identified as Biswajit Biswas, 35, a resident of Bhimpur in Nadia. He used to work as a quack in Bihar.
On learning about the death of his elder brother, Biswas was returning to Nadia. He was accompanied by a friend named Keshav Kumar who hails from Bihar.
They boarded the Sealdah-bound Muzaffarpur Express. Their plan was to get down at Naihati station in North 24-Parganas and then take a local train to Nadia.
However, they fell asleep on the train and by the time they woke up, the train had reached Kankinara. Hence, Biswas and his friend got down at Kankinara around 2.40 in the wee hours today 14 September.
As soon they stepped on Platform No 3, the three miscreants tried to snatch the belongings of Biswas. As he resisted the bid, the miscreants thrashed him and then hurled crude bombs at them.
Biswas got injured in the bomb attack and died on the spot. His companion Kumar managed to escape unhurt.
By the time the Government Railway Police (GRP) personnel rushed to the spot, the miscreants fled. Police later found out from Kumar that he was carrying with him Rs 1-lakh in cash and the miscreants decamped with the money.
Police are questioning Kumar to find out whether he played any role in the incident by way of passing advance information to miscreants that Biswas is carrying Rs 1-lakh with him.
