Kolkata, 22 September: PEOPLE commuting along the VIP Road to Kolkata airport had a harrowing time on Tuesday evening with traffic coming to a standstill due to a public rally organised by the Trinamool Congress near Kaikhali in connection with the Bidhanagar civic polls.
An evening shower only added to the woes and several airport bound passengers were forced to walk their way for more than two kms dragging their luggage. Vehicles were seen moving at a snail pace on all roads leading to the airport.
The flyover connecting the EM Bypass from Haldiram to Charnok Hospital, the entire stretch of VIP Road from Airport Gate No-1 to Teghoria, the service roads on either sides of the VIP Road saw huge number of buses and smaller vehicles being stranded for up to 45 minutes.
Some people said that they chose to walk up to Haldiram from Birati as the vehicles were intermittently moving at a snail pace and were again coming to a grinding halt for 10-15 minutes at a stretch.
Making the situation worse, several commuters who got down from vehicles and decided to walk their way had to take shelter in roadside stalls because of a sudden downpour.
Adding to the woes of the residents living on either sides of the VIP Road, loud speakers were being played at high decibel at the Trinamool Congress gathering. Loud speakers were put in place at Mall Road, Chinar Park, Teghoria and Airport Bus Stand.
This is despite end-term exams being on in several city schools and the area having a number of nursing homes, polyclinics and diagnostic centres.
