Kalyani: A young Trinamool worker has been lynched at Shantipur in Nadia district when he went to a polling booth with a motorcycle-borne gang allegedly to capture the booth.
The incident has taken place early this afternoon at Pabna Adivasi Para area at Shantipur. The deceased Trinamool worker has been identified as Sanjit Pramanik. He was a resident of Shantipur’s Sarbanandi Para.
Sources said that Pramanik and several other young Trinamool workers on motorcycles went to polling booth number 46 and 47 at Pabna Adivasi Para around noon and began beating up opposition political party workers and common voters known to be supporters of the CPI-M.
Initially, people got scared and ran away from the polling booths without casting their votes for the Panchayat poll. But not very long after, the people of the locality took a position on a nearby road and nabbed Pramanik as he was driving back from the booth. Other companions of him managed to escape.
The angry people began thrashing Pramanik left and right. He fell from the motorcycle and died on the spot. His body was then dumped by the highway that passes through the area.
On receiving information, a team from Shantinagar police station went to the spot and sent the dead body for post-mortem.
