Diamond Harbour, 03 February: TRINAMOOL cadres manhandled a lawyer and some activists of the civil rights group Association for Protection of Democratic Rights (APDR) at the Baruipur Sub-divisional Court premises today noon.

This when the APDR activists were holding a demonstration in front of the court against the arrest of Naxal party CPI-ML (Red Star) leader Sharmishta Choudhury and others on charges of mobilising villagers against an under-construction power transmission station on farmland at Bhangar in South 24-Parganas.

Choudhury was arrested on 25 January, along with two other leaders of her party, and since then they are lodged in CID custody. Today, there were produced again at the Baruipur court, which has extended their CID custody until 08 February.

Coinciding with their court production, a group of APRD activists today noon organised a demonstration holding placards and shouting slogans demanding release of all those arrested and dropping of cases against all civil rights activists including APDR state leader Sujato Bhadra.

During this, some Trinamool cadres launched an attack on them and started manhandling the demonstrators. They also roughed up lawyer Basudev Mondal, mistaking him to be the counsel for the arrested Red Star leaders.

Alleging that police remained a mute spectator when they were being assaulted by Trinamool cadres, the APDR activists subsequently blocked the Kulpi Road near the court for a while. Lawyers too resorted to a spontaneous cease work agitation against the manhandling of their college.

Trinamool cadres on the other hand continued to behave aggressively as the handful of police stay idle. This created a chaotic situation at Baruipur court for some time, until Trinamool leader and vice-chairman of Baruipur Municipality rushed and calmed down his party cadres.
