Bolpur: Trinamool has captured the Birbhum Zila Parishad even before the Panchayat elections slated for 1-5 May.
Out of the 42 Zila Parishad seats in Birbhum, opposition parties have been able to file nomination papers for only one seat. The lone nomination has been filed by BJP while CPI-M and Congress have drawn a blank.
Similarly, as regards the Panchayat samitis, the opposition could file nominations only in five out of the 19 seats. There is no scope for any more nominations as the deadline ended at 3 pm today. The polls in Birbhum are slated for 3 May.
In neighbouring West Burdwan district, 12 out of 21 Panchayat samitis have been pocketed by Trinamool as others could file nominations only in nine.
BJP Birbhum district observer Sayantan Basu said that the party could not file nomination in most of the seats because Trinamool deputed miscreants in and around all BDO and SDO offices in the district and launched attacks on BJP teams as they went to file nominations.
Congress district president Sayed Shiraz echoed the same. BJP national secretary Rahul Sinha went a step further and said that Trinamool capturing the Birbhum Zila Parishad by even before the elections through muscle flexing will remain a black spot in the politics of Bengal.
Trinamool Birbhum district president Anubrata Mondal, however, rejected the allegations. “This has happened because the opposition parties have no organisation in Birbhum and people are with us due to the all-round development,” he said.
