Barasat: The councillor of a Trinamool ruled civic body in North 24-Parganas has been arrested on charges of being hand-in-glove in the construction of a high-rise by filling up of a pond.
This has happened at Lichubagan area at Khardah Municipality and the accused councillor is Sanjib Pal Chowdhury, who represents Ward 19.
The Trinamool councillor and three men ~ Dipankar Dalui, Nripendranath Koley, and Subhash Pandit ~ associated with the construction firm which filled up the pond were arrested by Khardah police station today morning. They have been booked under the West Bengal Land Reforms Act and the West Bengal Inland Fisheries Act.
Police produced the quartet at Barrackpore court later in the day. The court granted bail to the councillor, sent Dalui and Koley to 3 days police custody, and Pandit to 3 days jail custody.
Residents of Lichubagan area noticed in the recent months that the 12-cottah large pond that has been there for decades was being suddenly filled up. On enquiring with the workers, they learnt that a high-rise residential complex is to come up after filling up the pond.
The residents opposed this and altered the Trinamool councillor. However, instead of taking a stand against the pond filling, the councillor allegedly sided with the promoter who is to build the high-rise.
On getting the boost, the promoter even started constructing the building on a portion of the filled up pond. Finding no other way, some residents of the area sent written complaints to the state fisheries department and the land reforms department.
After preliminary complaints, the departments referred the matter to Khardah police station for legal steps. Accordingly, police summoned the councillor and the representatives of the promoters today. They were arrested when they turned up at the police station.
