Malda: A prospective Trinamool candidate for the upcoming Panchayat polls in Malda has been shot dead by his rival faction in the party.
The incident took place today at Moshimpur village under Kaliachak police station jurisdiction. The victim has been identified as Mizanur Rehman.
The local Trinamool unit had convened a meeting in a school at Moshimpur today to finalise the party nominees for Bamangram Moshimpur gram panchayat seats. Rehman, who was an aspirant to contest the election, was present and so were his rivals in Trinamool.
As the discussion and debate were underway, a member of the rival faction suddenly opened fire at Rehman. He was shot thrice in the head from a close range, making him collapse on the ground.
After firing at him, the Trinamool rival faction members left the venue. Others present in the meeting rushed a critically injured Rehman to the Malda Medical College and Hospital. Doctors there advised him to be taken to Kolkata but he succumbed to the bullet injury midway.
Police are yet to nab any individual from the rival faction which is involved in the killing.
