Kalyani: A BJP worker has been shot dead at Santinagar in Nadia district by suspected Trinamool caders. The victim has been identified as Biplab Shikdar (45), who used to work at a thread dying unit.
According to his son, his father had been staying away from home for the past nearly one-month fearing attacks by Trinamool over the recently concluded Panchayat poll. With the tension receding, Shikdar returned home on Wednesday.
His Trinamool rivals got a hint of this and forayed into his house on Wednesday. There were five Trinamool cadres in the group, all equipped with firearms. They shot Shikdar in the in front of his wife and then escaped.
The critically injured Shikdar was taken to Santipur Hospital by his son and neighbours. Doctors declared him dead on arrival. The bereaved family subsequently lodged an FIR at Santinagar police station naming five Trinamool cadres. Cops have arrested two persons so far.
Peeved at the killing, BJP observed a 12-hour shutdown at Santinagar today. Party cadres blocked the roads at several places in the town demanding arrest of all the remaining accused.
