Diamond Harbour, 14 September: POLICE have arrested the Trinamool Congress’ Diamond Harbour MLA Deepak Halder in connection with massive violence at the local Fakir Chand College involving two factions of the ruling party on Monday afternoon.
The violence broke out after two factions of the Trinamool Congress owing allegiance to MLA Halder and the party’s Diamond Harbour block-I president Umapada Purkayat clashed.
Halder was present in the college when the warring members of the two factions clashed with each other with batons and rods leading to three persons being badly injured. The student union room at the college was also vandalised.
During the course of the violence, MLA Halder got into a verbal dual with the police officers who came to the campus to contain the situation. The MLA openly accused the inspector-in-charge of the Diamond Harbour police station of backing the rival group and extorting money from local traders for some time now.
News of the dispute reached the Bengal education minister Partha Chatterjee, who asked the police to arrest all trouble mongers involved in the incident irrespective of their political status. Within half-an-hour of this, the police arrested MLA Halder.
The arrest has triggered a protest by supporters of the MLA and they have now blocked the National Highway 117 that connects Diamond Harbour to Kolkata.
Trinamool supremo and Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s nephew Abhishek Banerjee is the Lok Sabha MP from Diamond Harbour.
