Kolkata: TRINAMOOL has removed Kolkata Mayor Sovan Chatterjee from the role of Gram Panchayat polls observer for South 24-Parganas district. This is even as he is still the president of the district unit of the party.
The move comes after Chatterjee skipped a meeting of the district unit held today to discuss Trinamool’s strategy and preparedness for the Gram Panchayat polls that are expected to take place by mid this year.
All the Trinamool MLAs and important panchayat functionaries were present in the meeting. Chatterjee skipped citing ill health but sources have claimed that he did so as the party has not yet met his demand for reinstating “friend” Baisakhi Banerjee as state general secretary of the Trinamool-affiliated West Bengal College & University Professors’ Association.
His bargaining tactic did not go down well with the Trinamool top brass and they outright replaced him as the district observer for panchayat polls. In his place, Trinamool all India general secretary Subrata Bakshi will oversee the task.
It may be mentioned that ever since Kolkata Mayor’s discord with wife Ratna Chatterjee surrounding Baisakhi Banerjee came to light and turned murky, the state government downgraded his security cover. This is despite that he also continues to be the minister for three important departments of the state government.
