Behrampore: A Congress MLA in Bengal today severed all ties with the party and switched over to the ruling Trinamool.
This takes the number of Congress MLAs who have joined Trinamool, since 2016, to eight. Until last year, seven Congress MLAs had switched over to Mamata Banerjee’s party.
The latest desertion has happened in state Congress president Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury’s home district Murshidabad and the MLA concerned is Apurba Sarkar. He represents Kandi Assembly constituency.
Sarkar changed his political jersey in a public meeting held at Kandi’s Mohun Bagan Ground today. Suvendu Adhikari, Trinamool transport minister and the party’s observer for Murshidabad district, handed over a Trinamool flag to Sarkar.
Sarkar was first elected an MLA in 2006 as an Independent candidate and later joined the Congress. In 2011 and 2016, he got re-elected from Kandi as Congress candidate.
On joining Trinamool, Sarkar today said that he wants to serve Mamata Banerjee and offer the Murshidabad Zila Parishad on her feet in the upcoming panchayat elections.
