Kolkata: Incessant rain through Sunday night till today morning has brought down its share of tragedy in Kolkata.
Two men ~ one an elderly and the other middle-aged ~ have died in sleep after an old dilapidated building caved in at Muripatty area of Baithakhana near Sealdah. Two persons have also been injured in the mishap.
The mishap took place around 2 am in the wee hours today when the old bi-storied building suddenly came crashing. There were 5-6 people at sleep on the ground floor of the building located in the congested commercial locality.
Hearing the sound of the debris crashing down, people from the vicinity rushed in and alerted Muchipara police station.
A team of cops and disaster management department personnel arrived swiftly and embarked on a rescue operation with the help of local people. Ratan Jana and Binod Shaw were recused in an injured state and sent to nearby NRS Medical College and Hospital. A little later, one Gopal Naskar (65) was found dead under the debris.
The rescue operation continued till morning, leading to the retrieval of another dead body that of Manik Jana (48).
The deceased and the injured are employees of business establishments at Baithakkhana and surrounding area. Police are yet to locate the owner of the building which had been declared “dangerous to reside in” by Kolkata Municipal Corporation.
Meanwhile, the Alipore Weather Observation Centre has said that it rained about 80 mm in the last 24-hours till 8.30 this morning. The bulk of the rainfall occurred late in the night till the wee hours today. It has rained sporadically in the city through the day today as well.
The weather office has forecast a heavy rainfall of up to 110 mm in most parts of Bengal, including Kolkata, over the next 48-hours.
