Howrah: Two persons got charred to death and a third person has suffered critical burns in a major accident on Kona Expressway in Howrah.
Some shops nearby the accident spot have also got reduced into ashes due to a fire triggered by the accident.
The accident took place around 4 this morning near Salap More area after a fuel tanker and a Tata 407 truck collided head-on. The collision was intense and was succeeded by three back to back blasts in the fuel tanker.
The blasts made flames to engulf some shops standing by the road. The railway overhead wire passing through the area also caught fire, disrupting train services on Howrah-Amta section.
The driver of both the tanker and the truck suffered critical burns and died right in their driving seats. A civic volunteer posted to man traffic at the spot suffered grievous burns as the burning fuel spilled on him. He is now battling for life at the Howrah District Hospital.
On learning about the accident, six fire tenders rushed to the spot and it took the firefighters two hours to douse the flames. Due to the accident and the resulting fire, traffic remained suspended on the arterial Kona Expressway for nearly four hours.
