Siliguri: Two persons died after a lorry loaded with LPG cylinders fell into a gorge at Lohapool area in Kalimpong district on Thursday morning.
The lorry was on its way from Siliguri to Sikkim along the National Highway 31A. While negotiating with a curve at Lohapool area, the driver lost control and the lorry fell into a gorge some 200 feet below the highway.
On being alerted by passers-by, a team from Reang police post and the district civil defence force reached the spot. They tracked down to the gorge and removed the LPG cylinders only to find the conductor of the lorry, Gaurav Sharma, dead.
The driver, Teg Bahadur, was rescued in a critical condition. He was at once rushed to the North Bengal Medical College and Hospital in Siliguri. Doctors declared him dead on arrival.
The highway to Kalimpong and Sikkim passes through precarious mountain ridges and is very narrow at many places. Then there is an added danger of frequent landslides during the monsoon.
