Siliguri: Two men have been arrested in north Bengal for feasting on a wild deer that died on being run over by a lorry on National Highway 31 at Damanpur forest range area in Alipurduar district.

They have been identified as Prabin Kujur and Heera Khalko, residents of Dabri tea estate area adjacent to the Buxa Tiger Reserve in Alipurduar. The two are wage labourers who worked in a lorry.

Forest officials yesterday got a call from the local residents that a wild deer had been mowed dead by a speeding truck at Damanpur area. A forest team rushed to the spot soon but did not find the carcass.

The forest team found a horn and some leftover meat of the deer from their house. They subsequently confessed to having feasted on the deer. On being produced in a court today, the two were remanded to seven days in police custody.
