Barasat: Two wage labourers have died while cleaning up the septic tank in a convent school at Khardah in North 24-Parganas.
The incident took place today morning at St. Xavier’s Institution located at Ruiya area of Khardah.
Since the school is on a summer vacation now, maintenance of the building and allied infrastructure is on at the school. Today morning, a group of wage labourers came to the school for this.
Among them ~ Pradip Bor (24) and Sameer Das (31) hailing from Khejuri in East Midnapore, were assigned the task of cleaning up the septic tank. The duo got down into the 20 feet deep tank with necessary equipment.
But despite the lapse of several minutes, their co-workers waiting above were not getting any response. This made them sound an alarm and inform the school management. A little later, the dead bodies of Bor and Das were spotted inside the tank.
The school management at once reported the matter to Khardah police station. Police, with the help from other labourers engaged by the school, fished out the corpses and sent them for post-mortem.
It is suspected that the two labourers inhaled the toxic gas in the septic tank and fell unconscious into the waste material, which eventually caused their death.
