Kolkata: Union defence secretary, Sanjay Mitra, today paid a visit to Fort William, the headquarters of the Eastern Command in the city.
The visit was aimed at assessing operational preparedness of the Indian Army in eastern India where lies the borders with China, Nepal, Bhutan, Myanmar and, Bangladesh.
During the visit, Eastern Command officials briefed the defence secretary on the operational situation and operational preparedness, especially as regards counter-terrorism operations and border management.
Mitra, an Indian Administrative Service officer, was the health secretary in Bengal government in 2011 and, was later elevated to the position of state chief secretary.
In 2015 he stepped down as the chief secretary and went to Delhi to serve the Central government.
