Barasat: A physically challenged man, whom the police had arrested for alleged involvement in vandalism at Barasat railway station on 3 May, died at Dum Dum Central Jail yesterday triggering a massive protest today 9 May.

The protest began today morning with the pregnant widow and other family members of deceased Gautam Mondal resorting to a rail blockade at Lebutala halt station off Haroa in North 24-Parganas. They alleged that Mondal has died on being assaulted by police.

Soon, over a hundred neighbours from Mondal’s village joined in the rail blockade bringing train services on Barasat-Hansnabad route to a grinding halt from 7.41 am.

This made a team from Deganga police station rush to the spot but as the situation aggravated as they tried to remove the blockaders by applying force.

People were mostly angry because Denganga police station allegedly refused to register an FIR that Mondal’s wife wanted to lodge yesterday over his aberrant death in the jail custody.

The blockaders clashed with police by hurling brickbats that left two civic volunteers injured. Two police vehicles were also vandalised.

Finding the situation going out of control, the police first carried out a lathi-charged and then fired teargas shells on the crowd.

It was only after this that the crowd dispersed and train services on Barasat-Hansnabad route resumed at 11.20 am, that is, after nearly four hours. By then eight EMU local trains had been cancelled.
